On uncut enamel, there is a small decrease in bond strength. On dentin; however, there is a considerable improvement in desensitizing and sealing. Superior bond strength is offered, similar to that of total-etch materials. Total-etch adhesives are technique sensitive. The bond strength of these products is affected by the amount of moisture in the dentin after drying.
Additional information: Applying Phosphoric acid (32%) for 15 seconds decalcifies dentin to a depth of approximately 10 m. This leaves a thick mesh known as collagen fibers. These fibers can inhibit the bonding agent from completely sealing the dentin. This results in occasional or sometimes frequent post-operative pain. Self-etching eliminates this problem by etching approximately 1 m and not exposing a thick mesh of collagen. As a result, the sealing is much more consistent and relatively no post-operative pain occurs.
