There is an abundance of long-term clinical studies on non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs). These clinical research papers have been summarized in a meta-analysis that was published in Dental Materials. This meta-analysis covering 63 years of clinical studies1 provides clinicians with several proven clinical guidelines that answer many questions.

John Gammichia, DMD, from A Soft Touch in Family Dental Care in Apopka, FL recently saw a 42-year-old female patient who presented with pain on the lower left side. She had some teeth extracted in the past and didn’t want to have that done again. She recognized that saving teeth could get expensive, so she asked Dr. Gammichia to try to create a treatment plan that would save the tooth and fit into her budget. She had a nerve that had been irreversibly affected by the caries, so there was no way around doing a root canal. Dr. Gammichia sent her to an endodontist and it was taken care of that day. After this patient was out of pain, she returned to Dr. Gammichia to have the tooth restored. The goal was to create a permanent restoration that would last decades.

Reena Patel, DDS, of Chichetti and Patel Dental Wellness in Charlotte, NC recently saw a 58-year-old male patient who presented for a new patient exam with a chief complaint of pain in the upper right. The patient had a history of crowns completed on most of his back teeth due to wear from grinding and root canals. Dr. Patel completed a comprehensive examination on him with a full-mouth series, including intraoral and extraoral photos and an intraoral scan. His exam revealed fractures and erosion on the front teeth as well as a fractured root with infection on the upper right. The patient reported snoring, reflux, and waking up throughout the night. He had never had a sleep study and no history of wearing an occlusal guard. After a discussion with the patient about her findings, Dr. Patel determined the patient exhibited signs of sleep apnea or sleep-disturbed breathing. A referral was made to a local sleep physician to complete a sleep study and obtain a diagnosis. Regarding the pain he was having on the upper right, he was diagnosed with a fractured root there as well as inadequate root canal therapy on another tooth. A referral was made to an endodontist and surgeon where the fractured tooth was removed and the inadequate obturation was retreated with root-canal therapy.

Successful porcelain repair begins with identifying the cause of the fracture and properly preparing the bonding surface. This article outlines a reliable protocol for cleaning, priming, and restoring porcelain chippings, including cases with exposed zirconia or metal.

Patients with a history of dental trauma often shy away from discussing their smile goals due to anxiety and a belief that improvement is unattainable. The advent of same-day chairside CAD/CAM technology and esthetic zirconia has revolutionized dental restorations, making remarkable smile transformations possible while preserving tooth structure.

Demand for efficient, esthetic, and predictable same-day dentistry has transformed restorative protocols. Merriam-Webster defines the word “universal” as “adapted or adjustable to meet varied requirements.” In dentistry, that kind of versatility isn’t just convenient—it’s essential for achieving restorative success and delivering long-lasting results. Versatility, however, didn’t happen overnight. Dentistry’s path to universal bonding has been shaped by decades of scientific innovation, and for Kuraray Noritake Dental, that journey began with chemistry.

Adhesive dentistry has seen significant advancements over the past decades. Initially, dental adhesives evolved from no-etch systems to etch-and-rinse systems, which consisted of multiple components. From then on, manufacturers shifted focus toward simplifying the procedure. Different generations of self-etch adhesives and, finally multi-mode or universal adhesives were the result. The latter category, introduced in the early 2010s, nowadays comprises numerous products offered by many different manufacturers.
