Finding a dental cement that checks every box can be a challenge. Here, we explore the PANAVIA cement family and how each unique material helps simplify and streamline restorations.
As one of the most important materials in dentistry, dental cements play a big part in the success—or failure—of a restoration. But in reality, choosing which cement to use involves careful consideration of multiple factors to ensure the best outcome. For example, is the prep retentive or non-retentive? Which restorative material is being used? How esthetically demanding is the case? And what about patient expectations?
“The biggest issue with cements is the quality of the seal,” said Todd Sarubin, DMD, who owns Sarubin Family Dental in Pikesville, MD. “You need to have a cement that holds the crown on, provides protection to the tooth, prevents sensitivity and decay, and most importantly, seals the margin to prevent recurrent decay.”
While he added that over the years, finding a material that embodies all these essential qualities can be a challenge, he’s found success in his own practice using Kuraray Noritake Dental’s PANAVIA family of dental cements. And that’s good luck, considering the variety of dentistry that Dr. Sarubin provides to his patients, including sedation dentistry, implant placement, cosmetic procedures, and sleep apnea treatment.
1983: A Family Is Born
What began over 40 years ago with the launch of PANAVIA EX, the first adhesive cement to contain the original MDP monomer, has now expanded into 3 versatile cements that expertly combine strength, ease of use, and esthetics.
“PANAVIA comes in 3 variations: a full-on bonded cement, a simple self-cure cement, and a veneer cement,” explained Dr. Sarubin. “All 3 cements handle the same way, but you can choose which one you need for your specific situation. In my experience, they are easy to clean up, well bonded, radiopaque, and very strong. Plus, they can handle most—if not all—dental materials.”
Designed to Simplify
PANAVIA SA Cement Universal is designed to eliminate the need for primer and silane by adhering to virtually all restorative materials without a separate step. The original MDP monomer creates a strong chemical bond to enamel, dentin, metal alloy, and zirconia, while the unique LCSi monomer facilitates a strong chemical bond to porcelain, lithium disilicate, and composite resin.
Next up is PANAVIA V5, a highly strong dentin bonding cement that is durable enough to cement crowns, single-wing cantilever bridges, and veneers. Here’s how it works: first, the MDP monomers strongly bond to enamel and dentin, and second, the PANAVIA V5 Tooth Primer comes in contact with the paste to accelerate the curing process. Continue cementation with CLEARFIL CERAMIC PRIMER Plus, which ensures a durable bond to metals, zirconia, and composite.
Easy to apply and remove, the 5 glycerin-based PANAVIA V5 try-in pastes—White, Brown, Universal, Clear, and Opaque—ensure optimal esthetics even in the most delicate cementation appointments. “PANAVIA V5 is a full-on bonded cement,” said Dr. Sarubin. “Its chemistry gives you the ability to clean the tooth and the crown with primers that enhance the bond, making it a strong and color stable cement.”
Cement Veneers with Confidence
Last but certainly not least, there’s PANAVIA Veneer LC, a light-cure resin cement with excellent color stability, high wear resistance, ample working time, and fast and easy cleanup. Indicated for veneers and inlays and onlays with less than 2 mm in thickness, it leverages newly developed spherical silica fillers that provide stability while allowing for ideal flow when the veneer is seated on the tooth.
“Veneers are highly fragile. They don’t bond with much retention due to their prep design, so you need a cement that can bond the tooth to the veneer—no matter what material you’re using,” noted Dr. Sarubin. “PANAVIA Veneer LC cement allows you to etch, prime, bond, seal, and protect the tooth with the utmost strength and stability.”
The ‘Best’ Seal of Approval
While each PANAVIA cement is unique in its composition, all 3 materials share one common thread—a Best Product seal of approval from DPS evaluators. In fact, PANAVIA SA Cement Universal received an impressive score of 4.9 out of 5 during its review period, with clinicians lauding its versatility, easy cleanup, and reliable adhesion to a variety of prosthetic restorations.
“The most important quality of a cement is its ability to hold the crown in place without coming loose, all the while protecting the tooth from further issues,” concluded Dr. Sarubin.
