For many CAD/CAM dentists, the advent of modern zirconia materials has been a welcome addition to the restorative workflow, as its exceptional blend of strength and esthetics lends itself to beautiful restorations that stand the test of time. When Kuraray Noritake Dental launched the KATANA Zirconia STML block almost a decade ago, it was unique in its ability to transmit light in the incisal area and block it in the cervical area—creating naturally esthetic restorations.
Fast forward to today, where the multi-layereed KATANA Zirconia ONE can be milled in Dentsply Sirona’s CEREC Primemill in under 5 minutes and sintered in the CEREC SpeedFire in just 18 minutes.
“I have been looking for a true esthetic chairside zirconia material that doesn’t look chalky and monotone,” shared Jeffrey Briney, DDS. After fabricating several single-unit crowns and bridges with KATANA Zirconia ONE, he said the results were beyond his expectations. “This material gives me confidence that it will provide my patients with a successful prognosis.”
Fast Chairside Milling
With 4 layers of zirconia in gradated shades that can be positioned using the CEREC Move tool, KATANA Zirconia ONE allows for chairside fabrication of natural tooth-colored restorations. Available in 14 shade options with just 1 block size for crowns and 1 block size for bridges, the material also has made a significant impact on the restorative workflow of Penelope Chang, DDS, who owns a tech-forward practice in Tenafly, NJ.
“The KATANA Zirconia ONE block has 4 layers— enamel, 2 transitional, and dentin—and the manufacturing technology allows each powder layer to seamlessly blend within a gradient profile, eliminating any demarcation lines between the different layers,” said Dr. Chang. “Additionally, the Yttrium concentration remains similar in all the layers so that the strength of the zirconia does not deviate from layer to layer. This allows for beautiful chroma and translucency with exceptional strength.”
Beautiful Results Anywhere in the Mouth
Dr. Chang particularly enjoys using KATANA Zirconia ONE in the posterior where extra strength is needed, such as for a patient who bruxes or on an implant-supported abutment. It’s also a good choice in cases that require minimal tooth reduction.
“Honestly, it can be used anywhere in the mouth— it’s that pretty,” she added. It’s great being able to offer esthetic zirconia restorations chairside that have such a fast workflow.”
