Say the word diastema in the universe of endodontics, and it will likely be met with caution—closing a diastema is almost always challenging. Except, though, if you’re world-renowned endodontist Dr. Michael Morgan. When a patient presented with a diastema not too long ago, he reached for Clearfil Majesty ES-2 Universal, and got to work.
“I love composites! Everybody has their thing— what they love to do—and for me, restorative work with composites is what makes me happy,” said Dr. Morgan. “My most recent diastema was one of the first cases for which I used Clearfil Majesty ES-2 Universal,” he added.
Becomes Virtually Invisible
Kuraray’s latest addition to the Majesty ES-2 series offers a simplified shade selection without a shade guide, blocker, or opaquer. Light cured and radiopaque, the product features Light Diffusion Technology (LDT), which enables restorations to diffuse light and integrate easily into surrounding teeth and preparation margins, becoming virtually invisible.
Speaking to Mike DiTolla, DDS, FAGD, on the One Shade vlog, Dr. Morgan pointed out that similar products tend to pick up color from adjacent tooth structure, and farther away from that they also tend to gray out. He has not seen this with Clearfill Majesty ES-2 Universal, which, in addition to the diastema case, he has used successfully on more routine restorations.
“Besides the diastema case, I can also use it on any small or medium size posterior restoration—even Class IIIs and Class Vs,” he explained. “When you play with it a little bit, it can do a lot of things—and it’s not as translucent as many of the other ‘chameleon’ composites that are out on the market.”
Posterior and Anterior Applications
Clearfill Majesty ES-2 Universal is recommended for posterior restorations, but it also can be used for anterior cases.
“I’ve been working on coming up with a simplified way to address anterior composites, and Clearfill Majesty ES-2 Universal has been a big help in that regard,” Dr. Morgan added.
With superior wear-resistant properties and low shrinkage stress, both endodontists and general dentists will find its wide-blending effects useful for a range of restorative cases.
Superior Polishability
Dr. Troy Schmedding, an accredited member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and a general dentist in Walnut Creek, CA, who also spoke with Dr. DiTolla on the One Shade vlog, commented that the “polishability is phenomenal.”
“Using Clearfill Majesty ES-2 Universal for a Class V is almost a no-brainer, because you’re trying to cover up a broad surface area and this material can draw out existing tooth structure and blend in nicely,” he said.
“It’s nice to have one composite that does the majority of your posterior work, and Kuraray is known for quality,” Dr. Schmedding added. “I find that Universal is great for about 70% of my cases—this is a high quality product that will stand up over time.”
