Kuraray Noritake Dental adds another DPS Best Product award its shelf of nearly a dozen doctor-approved restorative materials. Here, several clinicians explain why.
Where would a composite be without its bond? During direct restorations, these two materials team up to ensure high-quality, esthetic restorations that will stand the test of time. It always helps if they’re backed by science and expertly designed to work together in a variety of clinical scenarios.
DPS evaluators recently put an exciting product duo to the test: Kuraray Noritake Dental’s CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick 2 and CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal. Leveraging a trio of monomers—the original MDP monomer, plus unique AMIDE and new UTM monomers—CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick 2 forms a thin, strong adhesive layer with no waiting time. It pairs well with CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal, a high-viscosity flowable composite that delivers exceptional esthetics and outstanding physical properties.
“ The flow rate of the 1-step CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick 2 is perfect for dispensing a drop at a time.” – Aliisha Choucair, DMD
No Waiting, Zero Waste
“Trying a new bonding agent can be anxiety ridden,” admitted Aliisha Chocair, DMD, a general and cosmetic dentist in Leander, TX. “So much of the success of what we do depends on it. I had been using a 2-step adhesive for years, which worked well, but I was constantly throwing out more than half,” she shared, adding that her assistant would dispense the product into separate wells, and often, a huge surplus would be disposed of after the procedure.
“The flow rate of the 1-step CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick 2 is perfect for dispensing a drop at a time. I don’t waste material, I save time, and I had zero reports of postop sensitivity.”
Dr. Chocair is not alone in her praise of CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick 2, which has a low film thickness, a quick application time, and forms a uniform bond layer that won’t pool. “I enjoyed the quick application and no waiting time while using CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick 2, as well as the fact that we could store it at room temperature,” said Dr. Christian Secareanu.
“ CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal is particularly useful in challenging Class II restorations where the gingival floor extends well below the gingival margin.” – Karen Guo, DMD, MPH
“CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick 2 is a very versatile, 1-step product,” said Lea Manosov, DDS, who practices at Smiles For Miles in Modesta, CA. “I used it to bond an onlay on a vital tooth to help with sensitivity. Having the product in one bottle is a big plus for assistant and doctor, and there’s no waiting or counting seconds.”
Solving Common Challenges
The other piece of the restorative puzzle, CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal, offers just the right amount of flow while being easy to polish with a long-lasting gloss finish. For Dr. Karen Guo, who used the restorative duo in her Lansdale, PA, practice, solving common clinical challenges was the biggest win. “Many dentists dread the subgingival Class II composite restoration, and CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal provides a predictable outcome for these difficult circumstances,” she noted.
The material has a high viscosity that allows the tooth shape to be easily retained, making it suitable for building up molar cusps and ridges. It also offers color matching with anterior and posterior restorations and has superior physical properties due to its high filler loading.
“CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal is particularly useful in challenging Class II restorations where the gingival floor extends well below the gingival margin,” added Dr. Guo. “If I can get a good seal with my sectional matrix and wedge, it’s a great product that flows into the corners of the preparation and can be used for both the modified closed sandwich and snow plow technique to achieve clinically and radiographically exceptional results.”
And while Dr. Guo typically reaches for her trusted 5th generation bonding agents, after trying CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick 2, she admitted that she could be persuaded. “I am curious how the bond will hold up long term, and who knows, perhaps I will become a convert!”
Saving Time, Improving Outcomes
Shade matching is a pain point felt by virtually every restorative dentist, including DPS evaluator Dr. Carmen Nelson. “No layering was required on any of the teeth restored; one tooth even had striations, and the restoration still blended great,” she said after using CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal in her practice. “It was impressive.”
This superior blending effect is achieved through the material’s unique LIGHT-DIFFUSION filler matrix, which allows a single universal shade to seamlessly blend with a wide range of tooth shades—covering all 16 VITA classical shades. It mimics the natural light-diffusion properties of tooth structure, enabling restorations to integrate beautifully into the surrounding dentition.
Appreciating the time it saved on shade selection and polishing, Dr. Nelson shared another case where the material stood out. “I recemented a zirconium crown that had an open margin due to a fracture when the crown came off. After cementation I used the composite to close gap—it matched so well I couldn’t even tell,” she shared. “It definitely keeps inventory easy for dental assistants and you don’t have to worry when that last-minute emergency is scheduled if you will have the correct shade available for the patient.”
