What is Esthetic Colorant?
Esthetic Colorant is used for coloring and characterising pre-sintered zirconia structures. This product is especially designed for the “KATANA™ Zirconia” multi-layered series such as UTML or STML. It has been developed so that colors appear correctly when sintered at this series’ baking temperature. As this product is designed for pre-colored zirconia, the line-up does not include body colors. The liquid colors are also more moderate compared to similar products from other manufacturers.
Can I apply Esthetic Colorant on Lithium Disilicate materials?
No, Esthetic Colorant is a dental colouring liquid for “KATANA™ Zirconia”. This product is designed in order to reproduce high aesthetics when using with “KATANA™ Zirconia” multi-layered series, but you can use this product on mono-colored “KATANA™ Zirconia” as well.
Can I apply Esthetic Colorant on “KATANA™ Zirconia” HT or LT?
Yes, you can apply Esthetic Colorant on “KATANA™ Zirconia” HT or LT. Please note that “KATANA™ Zirconia” HT or LT is designed to use in combination with porcelain layers. After applying Esthetic Colorant and sintering, use dental porcelains for finalization. For detailed instruction for building up the porcelain or selecting a target shade, refer to the Instructions for Use supplied with products such as “CERABIEN™ ZR”.
Will applying Esthetic Colorant weaken the zirconia?
The ratio of a composition that can weaken zirconia strength included in Esthetic Colorant is low, which reduces the risk of weakening zirconia strength.
Does Esthetic Colorant have fluorescent properties?
Esthetic Colorant does not have fluorescent properties except for Pink which is the only shade with fluorescence. When using this shade for the gingival area, cover with porcelains which do not have fluorescence, such as “CERABIEN™ ZR” Tissue shades. For the tooth area, you can increase the florescence of the restoration by finishing with porcelains that have fluorescence such as “CERABIEN™ ZR” FC Paste Stain Clear Glaze etc.
How should I dry the restoration after applying Esthetic Colorant?
After applying Esthetic Colorant, dry the zirconia at 80-200°C for a minimum of 30 minutes, with a device which can be set to 80-200°C, such as a burn-out furnace or an oven. Use a non-metallic tray such as a ceramic tray to prevent discoloring.
What happens when the drying process is not carried out sufficiently?
It may cause reduced translucency, cracking or bubbles on the surface of the restoration.
What happens if I dry the restoration at 200°C+, after having applied Esthetic Colorant?
Introducing colored, still-wet zirconia into a device such as burn-out furnace (where the temperature is higher than 200°C) risks boiling the remaining liquid inside the zirconia resulting in cracks.
After sintering, the restoration painted with Esthetic Colorant turned yellowish. Why?
Check whether your furnace is contaminated. Clean the furnace by following the Instructions for Use supplied with the product.
After sintering, the restoration painted with Esthetic Colorant had reduced translucency. Why?
Possible causes: 1-The sintering temperature may be too low. 2-Esthetic Colorant was not sufficiently dried before sintering.
Do the results differ according to sintering time - for example sintering for 54 minutes or 7 hours?
No, this doesn’t affect the colors of the result, as long as you sinter the restoration according to the “KATANA™ Zirconia” sintering schedule
After applying Esthetic Colorant followed by sintering, the restoration looks mottled and the colors uneven. Why?
The possible cause is oily fingers when coloring the restoration. We recommend you wear powder free gloves etc. and use a dedicated Liquid Brush Pen when using Esthetic Colorant. If the surface of the zirconia gets contaminated with grease etc., clean with an ultrasonic cleaner, then dry the restoration in a drying oven at 80-200°C for 30 minutes or longer.
Which finishing methods are recommended for “KATANA™ Zirconia” discs colored with Esthetic Colorant?
“KATANA™ Zirconia” colored with Esthetic Colorant can be completed by polishing or glazing. “CERABIEN™ ZR” FC Paste Stain Clear Glaze or Glaze can be used to achieve the final high aesthetic result according to your preferences. For detailed usage of “CERABIEN™ ZR” FC Paste Stain, refer to the Instructions for Use supplied with the product.
Can I apply Esthetic Colorant on dental zirconia other than “KATANA™ Zirconia” series?
No, it is not recommended to apply Esthetic Colorant on a zirconia material other than “KATANA™ Zirconia” series. Esthetic Colorant is designed to be sintered at the sintering temperature of “KATANA™ Zirconia”, and the sintering temperature of other zirconia discs differs depending on manufacturer. Therefore, depending on the dental zirconia that you use, colors can differ from the true Esthetic Colorant shades.
Can I use “CERABIEN™ ZR” to build up layers after the initial sintering conducted with the application of Esthetic Colorant?
Yes. To fine-tune the result and bring out character, use “CERABIEN™ ZR” porcelains or “CERABIEN™ FC Paste Stain”. For information on how to build up porcelains, refer to the Instructions for Use supplied with the product.
When coloring a white zirconia disc, can I use a dipping technique to apply shades such as A plus or B plus?
No, dipping techniques are not recommended. Esthetic Colorant can only be painted with a brush. To apply Esthetic Colorant, use a Liquid Brush Pen or commercially available non-metallic brushes.
Can I mix Esthetic Colorant shades?
No, do not mix shades. However it is possible to apply each shade in layers to pre-sintered zirconia.
What else do I need to bear in mind when using Esthetic Colorant?
To achieve consistent coloring results, any dust or grease must be removed from the surface of the pre-sintered zirconia before applying the liquid. The colors may not reproduce accurately if the surface of the pre-sintered zirconia is contaminated. After cleaning the surface, keep the zirconia away from metal such as tweezers
What kind of brushes should I use for applying Esthetic Colorant on zirconia?
Use Liquid Brush Pen or commercially available non-metallic brushes.
Can I fill the Liquid Brush Pen with a small amount of Esthetic Colorant for use throughout the day?
The Liquid Brush Pen is not reusable. Once you fill the pen with Esthetic Colorant, you cannot reopen the adjuster, as it may result in reduced performance. For colors you don’t use often, we recommend using commercially available non-metallic pens.
How should I clean brushes after using?
Rinse the brush with distilled water. Then, try writing something on a paper with high water absorbency to confirm whether there is any remaining liquid on it. For Liquid Brush Pen, to avoid reduced performance, refilling with additional liquid is not recommended. Once the pen’s reservoir becomes empty, be sure to use a new Liquid Brush Pen.
After having applied several shades of Esthetic Colorant, some colors have become mixed at the tip of the Liquid Brush Pen.
If the tip of the Liquid Brush Pen is contaminated with other colors or liquids, rinse the tip with distilled water. Then, try writing something on a paper with high water absorbency to check if the liquid in the reservoir comes to the tip of the pen, that there’s no rubbing or smudging, and if the colors appear correctly on the paper. Do not take the pen apart as this may affect performance.
How many layers of Esthetic Colorant can I apply on zirconia frameworks?
When using a Liquid Brush Pen, you can increase the chroma by approximately 1 shade (e.g.: A2 ➝ A3) with three layers of Esthetic Colorant applications. Depending on how you paint the restoration, the number of layers needed will vary, however too many applications may result in difficult color control after sintering. Therefore, to find the optimum amount for your purposes, initially apply Esthetic Colorant no more than three times. If you need to change the color of the restoration significantly, use “CERABIEN™ ZR” FC Paste Stain to adjust the shade or add more characteristics.
Can I use Esthetic Colorant with dental coloring liquids from other manufacturers?
No, do not use this product with other dental coloring liquids from other manufacturers as it may cause unpredictable results.
